RESTORATION DETAILS

 

Objectives -

THE FOLLOWING OBJECTIVES WERE SET AND OBSERVED AS THE SCOPE FOR THE RESTORATION OF THE WELLS GRAY:


  1. •ALL ASPECTS OF THE BOAT REBUILT TO THEN REQUIRE ONLY ROUTINE  MAINTENANCE THROUGH THE YEAR 2027.

  2. •EXPOSE AND INSPECT ALL AREAS OF THE BOAT.

  3. •DETERMINE ALL AREAS THAT NEED TO BE REBUILT.

  4. •REBUILD WITH AN UNDERSTANDING OF WHAT CAUSED PROBLEMS/FAILURES AND TAKE STEPS TO PREVENT REOCCURRENCE.



HULL -


  1. •38 OAK FRAMES DRIVEN.

  2. •442 FT OF HULL PLANKING REPLACED.

  3. •IRON BARK ICE SHEATHING AND ANCHOR GUARDS REMOVED FOR REFASTENING, CAULKING, RESEAMING. ALL FASTENED OVER IRISH FELT.

  4. •ENTIRE HULL RECAULKED.

  5. •FIVE 1” KEEL BOLTS REPLACED.

  6. •PURPLEHEART ENGINE BEDS INSTALLED OVER FIR TIMBERS. ALL BOLTS REPLACED WITH 3/4”.



DECKS -


  1. •AFT WELL DECK REMOVED. REPLACED BREAK BEAM, DECK BEAMS, BREAST HOOK, BULWARKS AND CEILING, DECKING CAPS.

  2. •BELOW WELL DECK WATER TANKS INSPECTED, PAINTED, NEW FASTENERS AS NEEDED.

  3. •PORT AND STARBOARD WELL DECKS REPLACED. BREAK BEAMS REPAIRED WITH SCARFS OR NEW AS REQUIRED.

  4. •435 FT OF AFT DECK PLANKING AND COVERING BOARDS REPLACED.

  5. •80 FT (APPROX) OF FORWARD DECK PLANKING REPLACED, AS WELL AS A SECTION OF THE PILOTHOUSE SILL.

  6. •PORT TOWNSEND FOUNDRY SUPPLIED ALL BRONZE FITTINGS. STANCHIONS, CHOCKS, BOLLARDS, INTERIOR SEATING. OAK BLOCKING INSTALLED FOR AFT STANCHIONS.

  7. •PILOTHOUSE TOPSIDE REDONE WITH PLYWOOD & EPOXY.

  8. •AFT SCUTTLE REBUILT.

  9. •MASTS REBUILT TO ORIGINAL DESIGN. NEW AFT MAST STEP AND WIRING.

  10. •ALL RUNNING LIGHTS NEW (EXCEPT REBUILT PORT & STBD) AND REWIRED.



EXTERIOR MISC. -


  1. •ALL WINDOWS, DOORS, SKYLIGHTS REMOVED AND REBUILT AS NEEDED. REINSTALLED WITH 10 COATS OF VARNISH.

  2. •ALL PORTLIGHTS RESEALED AND REFASTENED.

  3. •NEW DAVIT AND RADAR MOUNT.

  4. •TENDER REFINISHED.

  5. •NORDIC HYDRAULIC ANCHOR WINCH AND FJORFORD 145 LB ANCHOR.

  6. •HULL WOODED, LONGBOARDED, PAINTED.



ENGINE ROOM -


  1. •GUTTED FOR ENTIRE SYSTEMS REFIT.

  2. •NEW DIESEL 130 HP LUGGER ENGINE (JOHN DEERE BLOCK). fuel consumption 2.33 gph @ 8 knots.

  3. •TWIN DISC 5050 3:1 REDUCTION GEAR.

  4. •AQUAMET 19 2” SHAFT INSTALLED.

  5. •CUSTOM 5-BLADE PROP DESIGNED AND INSTALLED.

  6. •intermediate bearing and stuffing box rebuilt.

  7. •fuel tanks and fuel transfer systems rebuilt.

  8. •constant velocity hydraulic system installed.

  9. •high volume hydraulic pacer pump for wash down and emergency bilge pump.

  10. •2 new bilge bumps, switches and high water alarms.

  11. •racor 1000 fuel filter.

  12. •pro mariner galvanic isolator.

  14. •270 amp alternator for house bank.

GALLEY -


  1. •ALL NEW.

  2. •ELECTRICAL SUB-PANEL (12V & 110V) TO SERVE AFT CABIN AND GALLEY. RHEOSTAT CONTROLS FOR LIGHTING, STOVE FAN, GALLEY HOOD. ALL WIRING NEW WITH AMPLE OUTLETS.

  3. •1920’S ERA COAST FOUNDRY STOVE REBUILT WITH 3 COILS IN FIREBOX FOR HEATING DOMESTIC FRESH WATER AND HYDRONIC RADIANT HEATING OF FORWARD SALON.

  4. •butane countertop cook top with vent hood exhausted to outside.

  5. •5 cubic ft. freezer.

  6. •3.5 cubic ft. refrigerator.

  7. •isotherm hot water heater. heated by 110v 750w service or stove coils.

  8. •custom built cabinets and countertops. self closing drawer slides.

project summary -


in many ways the above represents the “short list.” as you view the pictures of the wells gray, perhaps the most important part of the reconstruction project will be apparent. i feel it is in the quality of craftsmanship and materials being brought together with considerable thoughtfulness. maybe it is just a matter of loving one’s work and doing each and every detail as well and as exacting as possible. I’ve had the great privilege of working alongside shipwrights and mechanical experts who feel just that way. it has been a joy to do so.     — albert
